Message If you have a Slow to act T-Stat, the temp will rise and then fall. OR you could have a Leaking Head Gasket, that is allowing bubbles to get trapped behind the T-Stat, causing the same symptoms..

My Suggestion.
1) Check for Rad fluid and containments.. clean as necessary
2)Change the T-Stat
3) ONLY IF THE PROBLEM OF OVERHEAT BEFORE SETTLING PERSISTS, remove the T-Stat, and check for combustion gasses in the Rad Fluid.. for possible head gasket leak..

I'm no good on the Smoke Issue.. I'm NA
